The 2024-25 season could provide clarity for the Montreal Canadiens' management regarding Kirby Dach's future role with the team.

After missing all of last season due to a knee injury, GM Kent Hughes has admitted that he is unsure about Kirby Dach's place in the team's long-term plans.

Initially acquired as the Canadiens' second-line center, Kirby Dach was expected to help Nick Suzuki by forming a dynamic "one-two punch" in the top six.

However, this season, he has primarily been used as a winger rather than a center, which raised questions about his position in the team's future lineup.

Kirby Dach's offensive production has been underwhelming, with only one goal and eight points in 22 games, but surely his big injury that happened last year doesn't help him get back on track.

Elliotte Friedman recently speculated that the Pittsburgh Penguins could be a potential trade destination if the Canadiens decide to explore a trade for Dach.

And this is what Elliotte Friedman was asking himself :

"Whether or not Dach would be a player that Dubas would think to target to quickly turn over the Pens' lineup while they still have Crosby, Malkin and Letang."

Despite a challenging debut season, Kirby Dach retains some market value because of his size and his long-term potential.

Given their limited trade assets, what the Penguins could offer remains to be seen if they really want Kirby Dach.

However, Kirby Dach could be an intriguing gamble for a contending team like Pittsburgh, especially as they aim to maximize the remaining prime years of their core trio, which includes Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang.
