Pierre LeBrun reveals a big scoop on a major transaction negotiated between the Canadiens and the Hurricanes
During the latest episode of the "Radar" podcast, journalist Pierre LeBrun revealed major information regarding a trade negotiated between the Montreal Canadiens and the Carolina Hurricanes.
As you know, just before the 2024 draft, Habs general manager Kent Hughes was very active on the trade market, hoping to acquire an offensive forward who could improve Martin St-Louis' top two lines.
Moreover, according to information shared by Pierre LeBrun earlier this week, the Montreal Canadiens and the Columbus Blue Jackets came very close to getting their hands on Czech forward Martin Necas this summer.
New details emerge regarding Kent Hughes' offer for Martin Necas
To that end, the tipster revealed brand new information during his podcast, giving a big clue about the package Kent Hughes was offering to the Carolina Hurricanes' general manager.
"If Demidov had been drafted earlier, do you think the 5th overall pick was on the table for Martin Necas?"
And Pierre LeBrun's response:
"I don't think so. I may be wrong, but it was never confirmed to me that the 5th pick was on the table. The Canadiens had a second pick in the first round (21st overall), I think it would have been the second pick on the table, plus...
I don't think I'm going to say the player's name...
Because I don't remember if I was allowed to say it, in our conversation (that I had with my source). »
Now that's interesting!
Of course, the 21st overall pick, which he mentions right here, ended up being Michael Hage, who is having an excellent start to the season with 9 points in 9 games with the University of Michigan in the NCAA.
On the other hand, let's remember that, according to information reported by Marco Normandin after the draft, the Montreal Canadiens had an offer on the table to potentially get their hands on Trevor Zegras from the Anaheim Ducks.
As a matter a fact, according to his sources, Kent Hughes would have offered Logan Mailloux as well as the 21st overall pick to acquire Cole Caufield's good friend, a proposal that the CH general manager would have finally withdrawn when seeing that Michael Hage was still available.
"At the start of the first round of the annual NHL draft in Las Vegas in late June, the Canadiens and the Ducks had agreed on the basis of a transaction that would have sent Trevor Zegras to Montreal in addition to one of their 2nd round picks. In return, the Canadiens would have given up young defenseman Logan Mailloux as well as their later 1st round pick (21st overall) in 2024.
However, I am told that it was the Canadiens who eventually made the decision not to complete the transaction and announced it to the Ducks during the first round." - Marco Normandin
We can therefore wonder if Kent Hughes had made a similar offer to the Carolina Hurricanes for the services of Martin Necas.
Unfortunately, Pierre LeBrun did not want to reveal the name of the player who was involved in this transaction, but it could very well be Logan Mailloux, especially if the defenseman was offered to the Anaheim Ducks.
Would you trade Logan Mailloux and Michael Hage for Martin Necas?
Despite the many trade rumors regarding him, Martin Necas finally signed a two-year contract extension with the Hurricanes, he who is simply dominant this year with a harvest of 11 goals and 20 assists (31 points) in 19 games.
