During a recent appearance on The Sick Podcast With Tony Marinaro, Eric Engels made a major statement regarding young Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson.

As he and Tony Marinaro discussed the offensive contribution of No. 48, the Sportsnet reporter said he was extremely impressed by the level of intensity the rookie brings, game after game.

Eric Engels especially appreciated the fighting spirit Lane Hutson showed on Emil Heineman's goal against the Sabres on Monday.

Engels highlighted the effort of the young defenseman, who won a battle deep in the zone before returning to his position at the blue line to deliver a magnificent pass to his teammate who found the back of the net.

Even though Nick Suzuki's position is not in danger, he who is doing a remarkable job as captain, Eric Engels still mentioned that Lane Hutson has all the skills necessary to become the next Canadiens player to wear the "C" on his jersey.

"We talk about Nick Suzuki as a captain, Lane Hutson, to me, has those qualities that one day, he could be the next [captain of the Montreal Canadiens]." - Eric Engels

A statement that says a lot about the 20-year-old defenseman, who only has 19 games of experience in the National League!

Obviously, Eric Engels did not suggest that Nick Suzuki give up his "C" to give it to Lane Hutson this year.

Eric Engels statement was mainly aimed at highlighting the competitive spirit that the 2022 second-round pick employs, who constantly gives 110% on the ice in the hopes of having a significant impact on the outcome of games.

Personally, I tend to agree with the journalist's comments.

I don't think Lane Hutson should be the captain, he is still much too young to assume such responsibilities, but I remain convinced that the Canadiens would not be ranked 28th in the NHL right now if all the players on the team put in the same level of effort as Lane Hutson.

It's really encouraging to see the progression of the young defender, who is increasingly choosing his moments to venture into opposing territory.

One thing is certain, the Montreal Canadiens have landed an offensive defenseman with incredible potential. Since his debut in the Bettman circuit, Lane Hutson has recorded 13 assists in 21 games.
