Cole Caufield Opens Up in Interview, Makes a Heartbreaking Statement
Shortly before the matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night, TVA Sports aired a very touching interview with Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield.
Given that it was the Canadiens' first game against the Blue Jackets since the tragedy involving Johnny Gaudreau, Renaud Lavoie spoke with the Habs' number 13, who had an excellent relationship with Patrik Laine's former teammate.
Cole Caufield spoke about the death of his good friend, mentioning that he was completely shocked when he heard the news.
He also mentioned that he was unable to do anything in the following days, being too saddened by the events that shook the NHL.
He explained where he got the idea to change his number, going from #22 to #13. Cole Caufield indicated that this change was mainly to honor his hero, who plans to keep this number for the rest of his life.
"In the first few days that followed, I was in shock and I couldn't do anything. And suddenly, I said to myself "I want to represent him by changing my number." A number that I had already worn in his honor. I didn't know if it was going to work. I want to honor him for the rest of my life." - Cole Caufield
It's so sad to hear...
We knew that the Habs forward had been greatly affected by the death of Johnny Gaudreau, but we didn't think that it took such an important place in Cole Caufield's life.
One thing is for sure, Cole Caufield is doing everything in his power to honour the memory of his friend, who is off to a great start to the season with 12 goals and 3 assists (15 points) in 18 games. We are sure that Johnny Hockey is extremely proud of his friend, whom he affectionately nicknamed Eloc.
The Habs forward also indicated that he felt like he was in the company of his idol when he wore #13 on the ice, adding that he wanted to keep that number until the end of his career.
"I didn't really know how it worked, so I talked to Kent [Hughes] and Jeff [Gorton]. They talked to the league and they came back to me saying that it could work if that's really what I want to do.
For me, there was no doubt.
I want to honor him for the rest of my life. Every time I step on the ice, I feel like a part of him is with me." - Cole Caufield
Hats off to Cole Caufield for agreeing to pour his heart out on a subject that must clearly be difficult for him to talk about right now.
