While it was widely assumed that Cayden Primeau would get a start during the upcoming back-to-back games against the Detroit Red Wings, that no longer appears to be a certainty.
As Dave Lévesque of TVA Sports highlights, it's no longer guaranteed that the Canadiens' backup goalie will play in back-to-back situations.
Unfortunately, this speaks a lot about the apparent lack of confidence in Primeau from the Montreal Canadiens organization.
As Andrew Zadarnowski pointed out, Cayden Primeau's current statistics fall short of NHL standards.
At the beginning of the season, Martin St-Louis stated that it was obvious both goalies would share the workload during back-to-back games, but it changed since a couple of weeks.
When asked yesterday if Primeau would start, St-Louis gave a concise, non-committal response:
This doesn't rule out Primeau playing this week, especially with three games in four nights, but St-Louis's hesitation tells a lot about his thoughts.
It's unfortunate for Cayden Primeau who hasn't performed to expectations this season in Montreal.
And you, do you think Martin St-Louis' hesitation suggests that another goaltender might be used instead of Cayden Primeau and that the Canadiens will make a move soon?
For now, this remains speculation, but it's certainly noteworthy that St-Louis avoided making a firm commitment.
