Martin St-Louis didn't hold back in commenting on Arber Xhekaj's recent performances
After a few difficult games for Arber Xhekaj at the start of the season, Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St-Louis didn't hesitate to send him a message publicly.
Although St-Louis is used to defend his players in front of journalists, he clearly expressed his dissatisfaction with the number 72's performances, mentioning that he needed to play better.
"I expect a better version. I want him to stay alert and more consistent. You know, you should worry about making mistakes, right? He's not a rookie anymore, so he should say, 'I need to be better.' It's very simple. It's not like we're nitpicking everything he does, but he needs to improve." - Martin St. Louis
However, Martin St. Louis' words have paid off as the 23-year-old has really stepped up his game lately, so much that he now seems to be considered the 5th defenseman in the team's hierarchy.
The 6-foot-4, 240-pound defensemen has a slight head start on Jayden Struble and Justin Barron, who has played the Montreal Canadiens' last eight games, while the other two defensemen have alternated on the third defensive pairing.
Much more effective in his own zone, Arber Xhekaj looks confident on the ice, which is evident in his decision-making with the puck, but also in his defensive responsibilities.
Moreover, during a recent press conference, the head coach of the Habs, Martin St-Louis, highlighted the progress made by his defensemen, mentioning that he was heading in the right direction.
"I think he's found a rhythm. We tried to give him a rhythm by having him play in consecutive games one after the other. We can see that he's gaining confidence with these repetitions. His defensive responsibilities, he's much more consistent.
I think that in general, the more confident he is, the better he'll touch the puck and he'll be in a better position mentally. I think it's a progression, it didn't happen overnight. It's a series of actions and he's building his game." - Martin St. Louis
It's good to see Martin St-Louis making such positive comments about Xhekaj!
Since his debut in the NHL, the Habs defenseman has recorded 8 goals and 16 assists (24 points) in 111 games, while collecting an impressive total of 201 penalty minutes.
