The Montreal Canadiens are in a bad situation right now, sitting in 31st place in the NHL overall standings.

In the 3rd year of rebuilding, being the second-to-last worst team in the League is pretty pathetic. It's hard to imagine a worse scenario.

On Saturday night, against the Toronto Maple Leafs, we really thought this duel would whip Martin St-Louis' men.

A duel against such a big rival is always motivating and the players were, according to Cole Caufield before the game.

"Saturday (night) in Toronto is probably the second best game after a game in Montreal (at the Bell Centre). You get up for all these games, but tonight is a very important game for us and we're looking forward to it." - Cole Caufield

The problem is that the boots didn't follow the lips. The players didn't show up for the game, which was lost 4-1.

Needless to say, what went wrong was the Maple Leafs scored twice on the power play and once shorthanded.

It's bad that Josh Anderson or Christian Dvorak make costly mistakes, but they're not the heart and soul of this team.

When it's captain Nick Suzuki who's nonchalant and doesn't give a second effort, we have a serious problem.

And Martin St-Louis has an even bigger problem, when he has plenty of passengers on the team. He can't just sit Suzuki on the bench, he doesn't have anyone who deserves his ice time.

In short, according to Arpon Basu, this is an unacceptable level of effort and the Canadiens absolutely must correct course.

"Over the last four games, Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Kirby Dach, Juraj Slafkovsk, Mike Matheson and Lane Hutson - their offensive core - have scored no goals and only two assists. Two points in four games for their top six offensive players. Brendan Gallagher alone has scored three goals in the same stretch.

This situation should not be acceptable." - Arpon Basu

The good news at least is that Brendan Gallagher is impressing early in the season, but that's about it.

Let's hope the effort comes back very quickly, because it's all well and good to lose after having offered an opposition, but now the Canadiens are just handing games on a silver platter to their opponents.
