At 32nd in the NHL, fans are starting to look ahead to the upcoming draft, hoping for better days.
Analyst Simon "Snake" Boisvert made a bold statement on the Processus podcast, where he claims that defenseman Matthew Schaefer is the player the Canadiens should be targeting.
According to him, Schaefer could be the equivalent of Cale Makar and bring a Stanley Cup to Montreal in about six years. The analyst is known for his strong and often contrarian opinions, and he believes that Schaefer, despite fierce competition from prospects like center James Hagens, is the logical choice for the Habs.
Matthew Schaefer, 17, currently plays for the Erie Otters in the OHL. He is 6'1" and weighs 162 pounds. He stands out for his offensive skills and his exceptional vision of the game. In only 8 games this season, he has already collected 10 points, including 3 goals and 7 assists.
General manager Kent Hughes has indicated, however, that he will not make impulsive moves to correct the current season, preferring to focus on long-term development.
If the Canadiens finish in the bottom of the standings again, they could target a player like Schaefer, a strategy that could prove to be a winning one to strengthen the blue line and build a competitive team for years to come.
In the event that the organization gets its hands on its Makar with the next draft, it is clear that this difficult season will have been worth it for the future of the franchise.
