Acquiring Patrik Laine alone was a significant win for the Canadiens, but including a 2026 second-round pick makes this deal even more impactful.
On August 19th, the Montreal Canadiens landed Patrik Laine and a 2026 second-round pick from Columbus in exchange for defenseman Jordan Harris.
Considering the state of the Blue Jackets' rebuild, that draft pick could turn out to be far more valuable than initially anticipated.
As Marc-Olivier Beaudoin recently said, if Columbus continues to struggle, that second-round pick could land in the top 40 which is essentially bordering on a first-round pick.
If the pick ends up being around 35th overall then the Canadiens would receive an asset with most probably a high potential, and maybe, the next Lane Hutson!
Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets' season isn't progressing as hoped despite adding players like Sean Monahan.
They are currently sitting near the bottom of the NHL standings and their outlook for the coming season remains bleak and Jordan Harris has struggled with 1 point in 19 games and a -7 rating.
Compared to some of Kent Hughes' less successful trades, such as the Jonathan Kovacevic deal with the New Jersey Devils, this Patrik Laine trade could go down as one of the most significant moves of the decade for the Canadiens.
Not only do they get a talented scorer in Patrik Laine, but they also position themselves to add another high-upside prospect through the 2026 draft.
