The two analysts compared defensemen Michael Matheson and Rasmus Andersson, two defensive pillars on their respective teams.
The former NHL coach did not hesitate to show his preference for Andersson, going so far as to say that even his six-year-old daughter would choose the Flames defenseman without hesitation.
According to Hartley, Rasmus Andersson is a superior player who brings consistent stability and reliability to the blue line. Known for his exemplary defensive play, he excels at blocking passing lanes and facing the best opposing forwards night after night.
This season, Andersson has already collected 11 points in 18 games, while posting a positive differential of +2, which reflects his efficiency on both ends of the ice.
On the other hand, Mike Matheson, while effective for the Canadiens, is going through a more difficult start to the season. With 10 points in 17 games, but a differential of -10, his offensive performances do not always compensate for his defensive shortcomings.
Courted for his ability to carry the puck and create opportunities, Matheson demonstrated his offensive potential with an impressive 62 points in 82 games last season.
However, in a team like the Canadiens, which lacks defensive stability, his weaknesses in the defensive zone can be problematic.
For Montreal, acquiring a player like Rasmus Andersson would represent a golden opportunity to solidify its defensive brigade, especially since he is right-handed, compared to Matheson's left-handed.
His experience, reliability and versatility, especially on the penalty kill, would make him a crucial addition to stabilize the Habs' defense in the long term.
However, such a trade seems unlikely. Calgary would have little interest in giving up a player as complete as Andersson to get Matheson.
