He was very good alongside Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield at the start of the campaign (2022-23), but also at center at the end of the campaign. It was very encouraging to see him go.
He returned to training camp for the 2023-24 season in great shape and was dominant at center. Unfortunately, he got injured in the 2nd game for the whole season and we know the rest.
This injury could well have ruined everything for the player and for the Canadiens, who had very high hopes in him. Would Kirby Dach ultimately be something other than a top 6 center?
According to Georges Laraque and Stéphane Gonzalez, it would be catastrophic for the Canadien's reconstruction, and I completely agree.
This is exactly what we are seeing now. When Jake Evans has to play on the 2nd line, there is a serious problem. Nothing against Jake who I love and hope Kent Hughes signs him, but you get where I'm going with this.
No aspiring team has Jake Evans as a second-line center. That said, the Canadiens don't really have quality depth at this position and the fact that Kirby Dach is not developing as well as expected could put the team in trouble.
Michael Hage is the only center in the prospects with top 6 NHL potential and basing our hopes on an 18 year old kid who is just starting out in the NCAA would be illogical.
In short, I can't wait to see where this leads, but one thing is certain, if Kirby Dach does not become an impact player again, the Canadiens will be in trouble at center, once again.
